DESCRIPTION:Register for the 15th Annual Mohawk Towpath Byway Duathlon at http://www.mohawktowpath.org/duathlon for Sunday\, Oct. 15 at 8:30 a.m. for a 2-mile run/17-mile bike ride/2-mile run to the finish. The Duathlon attracts top\, regional\, multi-sport athletes\, as well as recreational runners and cyclists. The start\, exchange area\, and finish are all at Riverview Orchards\, at 660 Riverview Road\, and the course are through rural\, fall foliage landscapes along the Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway. Embroidered crew hats are available to the first 100 registered. All participants and volunteers receive a Giffy’s Bar-B-Q chicken dinner\, post-race. \n  \n

SUMMARY:23nd Annual Clifton Park Trails Day - Guided Bike Ride
DESCRIPTION:The Trails Subcommittee of the Open Space\, Trails & Riverfront Committee is leading an Erie Canal focused bicycle ride on Sunday\, June 4\, 2017 in the southern area of the Town of Clifton Park. This is the 22nd annual\, National Trails Day bike ride held in Clifton Park. The route will cover about 10 to 12 miles\, and be conducted at a casual pace.\nTown Historic John Scherer will provide ride commentary at stops along the way.  The ride helps celebrate the bicentennial of the construction of the Erie Canal\, and the completion of the Towpath Community Connector Trail project that connects the Vischer Ferry Nature & Historic Preserve in Clifton Park\, to a newly created trail section in the Town of Halfmoon. \nMeet up about 12:45 p.m. for a 1 p.m. ride start.  The ride begins and ends at the Historic Grooms Tavern\, located at the intersection of Grooms Road and Sugar Hill Road.  Bike entrance on Sugar Hill Road; car parking is available in a small lot\, off of Grooms Road\, west of the intersection. \nHelmets are required for all ages\, for all riders. DESCRIPTION:Please SAVE-THE-DATE for a joint event of the Town of Clifton Park Historic Preservation Commission and the Open Space\, Trails & Riverfront Committee slated for the weekend of Saturday\, May 13\, 2017. \nFRIDAY\, MAY 12:  A weekend kick-off event will be the Opening of the Erie Canal Exhibit at the newly restored upstairs of the Historic Grooms Tavern\, and a talk by Town Historian John Scherer on Friday\, May 12\, in the evening\, at Historic Grooms Tavern. Parking will be available at the Grooms Road entrance. Historic Grooms Tavern is located at the intersection of Grooms Road and Sugar Hill Road. \nSATURDAY\, MAY 13:  Activities will include: a guided walking tour of the Vischer Ferry National Historic District within the hamlet of Vischer Ferry; a guided walking tour of the Erie Canal along the towpath within the Vischer Ferry Nature & Historic Preserve. Tour the newly reconstructed Erie Canal Towpath Community Connector trail for a longer\, guided hike! \nFamily oriented activities will be offered throughout the day! \nBring your kayak or canoe\, and launch at Clute’s Dry Dock! \nFood and refreshments will be available at Vischer Ferry General Store\, 357 Riverview Road\, and further west\, at Riverview Orchards\, 660 Riverview Road (the site of the Apple Blossom Festival!). \nPartners include Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway Coalition and more! \nFor more information\, to volunteer\, to get involved\, please contact the Open Space Coordinator at 518-371-6054.

SUMMARY:Erie Canal Bicentennial Exhibit Opening at Historic Grooms Tavern
DESCRIPTION:Town Historian speaking to a group at the Historic Grooms Tavern\nAs a kick-off to the Erie Canal Bicentennial\, a new Erie Canal exhibit\, “Low Bridge: The Erie Canal in Saratoga County” will open at the Historic Grooms Tavern on Friday\, May 12\, at 6 p.m.\, with a reception\, and will be followed by a talk by Clifton Park Town Historian John Scherer at 7 p.m.\, as part of the Town of Clifton Park’s Open Space & History Weekend Celebration of the historic hamlet and nature preserve in Vischer Ferry.  Members of the Town of Clifton Park Historic Preservation Commission will be assisting as docents for this opening event. This event\, from 6 to 8 p.m.\, is open to the public. \nWhen the Erie Canal opened in 1825\, it was an engineering wonder (construction started in 1817!)\, and it was touted as the eight wonder of the world. About 13 miles of the Erie Canal went through the southern end of Saratoga County. John Scherer’s talk will include a visual presentation of the Erie Canal history in Saratoga County\, an exploration of the canal’s remains\, and the colorful local characters who worked on the canal. \nAcquired in 1999 for preservation as a local historic site\, the Historic Grooms Tavern is owned and operated by the Town of Clifton Park with support from the Friends of Historic Grooms Tavern.
